For me the writing was on the wall when I read a letter in The Times, 13/12/11 signed by Michael Spencer, CEO of ICAP, and others which says: "We welcome the UK Chancellor's recent assertion that he will consider all options to improve airport capacity in the South East of England." My misgivings were confirmed in February when I read on the Telegraph online that Mr Spencer had attended one of those Downing St "kitchen suppers". I do think it's important that we don't focus too much on the 3rd runway. Equally/more important for me is the number of aircraft movements at the airport, which the inspector at the T5 inquiry said must be limited to 480,000 a year because to exceed this would be intolerable for communities under the flight path. If the expansionist lobby gets mixed mode permanently, this would be brushed aside, and that really would ruin our lives in Putney. Justine has a good economics/finance background, and I'm sure she would make a better Chancellor than the juvenile currently in post. |
