I have read Councillor Lister's message concerning the Council's finances, and sense that the Council is beginning to behave like a musclebound bodybuilder.

For years, it has been flexing its muscles - fine, we appreciate strong leadership, especially where it is constructive. But things can go too far...

Councillor Lister blames inflation for the current perceived problems. Why then in previous years was Council Tax not raised in line with inflation, as most "businesses" are forced to do? Yes, to anticipate the response that by not raising inflation - the overall burden of Council Tax has come down fractionally, so the poorest members of the community have benefited; but the largest section of the poor are the old, whose pensions are linked to inflation.

The Council has got itself into a jam, and Tony Belton needs all the support he can get. I can't believe that all Tory Councillors are such minnows that they would follow their leader sheepishly and unthinkingly on this issue. There is stirring in the undergrowth.

There is a wider dimension to this debate too. Wandsworth Museum is used not only by locals. Good Museums [and Libraries for that matter] bring with them visitors from further afield, who need feeding at mealtimes, and patronise local shops. What will be the cost to such businesses if closure goes ahead?

I use many Libraries, and Museums, nationwide, whose facilities are paid for by their respective local communities. I shudder if other Councils start going down this route.

Wandsworth holds itself out as a leader amongst Councils. Unless Councillor Lister provides us with alternative facilities that are palpably better than those which he proposes should shortly be closed, I would say "What rubbish!"

Previous generations have fought for such facilities. We must not let them, or the future, down.
