Tony, you must be making a mistake here surely.  In 2002 you published an election leaflet saying that under Labour 'Council tax will remain the lowest in Britain' - not admittedly as extreme as your promise of a LOWER council tax than the Conservatives in 1998 but nonetheless an unmistakable commitment.  And just last May your manifesto stated, 'Labour has no interest in raising council tax' (something which we were unable to promise, incidentally, because we recognise the need to preserve core services).  So, at least as far as what you promised people so you could get yourself elected goes, you have been in complete agreement with the council's taxation policy, if not actually promising to cut it.  Now, assuming that you were not just telling cynical porkies in the hope of fooling people into voting for you intending to whack the tax up anyway (perish the thought), it follows that if you are not going to join our campaign to get the £5 million of government cuts reversed, you really have to come up with your own ideas of how to save the £400,000 cost of the Museum in another way.  Then we can all judge whether your proposals would be better or worse for people in our community.
