There is little one can say in response to Lucille's views other than that at least now we only have one million unemployed and a rip-roaring economy as opposed to three million and continual boom and bust. But as for Malcolm! I should stick to my position of saying enough is enough but really Malcolm going back to '98 (indeed at the time of writing the manifesto even '97 and a Tory Government) shows a level of pedantry I had not even thought you capable of. Everyone in the real world of politics knows that the real relevance of manifestos is "at the time". Since '97 there have been countless changes in grant regimes and indeed in the general environment. However hard you try, it is you, and quite rightly so, who is in the firing line over the Museum and Battersea Arts Centre and all your diversionary flak will not alter that fact. So to repeat: there is no danger of Wandsworth being capped; Council Tax has not changed in 3 years despite inflation of about 8% hence there has been a real terms cut; Government grant covers a higher proportion of Wandsworth's spending than any other London Borough; Yes, it is a smaller grant but a higher proportion because you choose to spend so little; that is your track record and to be fair you are proud of it. BUT don't pretend its someone else's responsibility when you make unpopular cuts and closures as in this case. |
