| Ms Holliday 'Jews and Israel are not the same thing' Very true. One is a state and the other an ethnic group. It just so happens that the state is predominately inhabited by that ethnic group that for millennia has lived there. And after being displaced and persecuted then returned and turned it into a safe haven and the only thriving democracy in the region. Yes it is theocratic to a degree but that does not override its openness such that, as you say, people of many other religions live there and have representation and representatives in its Parliament and can worship as they want. None of this denies the fact that its Jewish people are persecuted and discriminated against individually and collectively in many parts of the world and increasingly so. Even in the UK. This is pure racial prejudice as Israel is of no direct threat to any neighbouring country, And certainly not the UK that greatly benefits from having Israel as an ally and from its own Jewish citizens for their numerous and varied talents. Or of course antisemitism could be simply jealousy and envy towards a people whose own efforts have made them strong and prosperous whilst neighbouring Islamic states seem to languish on all accounts. |
