It's an easy mistake to make on a spreadsheet by simply missing a cell from the final calculation. The votes per se didnt go missing, they were all counted but someone didnt check their final spreadsheet. Someone also failed to do the most basic of checks. Now we face a procedure no doubt stretching to many pages telling people how to count. I suspect had the result been different the losing candidate or their agent would have demanded a recount as a simple view of the bundles usually gives an idea. Whilst a very stupid mistake it is a serious failure by the council and those in charge of the count as it undermines trust in the process. Perhaps we should have a close look at the councils published budget book to ensure it all adds up and no cells have been inadvertently missed from the final calculation. |
