| This morning Michael announced that ‘rational business people’ were switching allegiance to Labour. I presumed that this supposed switch was based on some insight into Labour’s plan for the economy, which I hoped might be shared with the rest of us. But according to John we cannot expect to see a plan until Labour publishes its manifesto. It follows that those on the Forum who are calling for a Labour victory are acting on the basis of hope rather than knowledge, no ? Perhaps Labour’s planned VAT raid on independent schools can give us an idea of what life under Labour would be like. According to the IFS, up to 40 000 children may be withdrawn from private schools because their parents cannot afford the increase in fees consequent on the VAT charge. Of these children around a fifth are likely to have special needs, which is why their parents sent them to the independent sector in the first place. But now several councils, including Cambridgeshire, Oxfordshire, Wokingham, Leeds, the Vale of Glamorgan, Solihull and Bromley have announced that they have no or very few places in the state system to accommodate these children. A triumph of ideology over common sense! |
