Mr Hawkes I try to be an optimistic. In my experience, some people given an opportunity and flourish and, yes, some fall by the wayside. The big issues are: (a) have they checked whether the organisations they've mentioned are prepared to cooperate; (b) will the funding be adequate for organisations to provide the training and support for this scheme; (c) can the logistics and details be worked out in time to get this scheme up and running with the necessary logistics, safeguards, etc required - particularly for a September 2025 start; (d) many seventeen year olds will have the next two or three years mapped out - the won't take kindly to having their plans changed. Would it not be better to plough the couple of billions set aside for this into existing education, training, apprenticeships, service organisation operations, etc for them to decide the best use of it rather than what will inevitably be an increased civil service with no experience of these organisations making decisions. I wonder if it will make it into the Conservative manifesto after its been run through a few focus groups. |
