Philippa, there is a lot of history with buses I suggest we forget it all and look forward. Train & tube lines are running under capacity and are subsidised by the public. The same organisation runs cheaper competing bus services along the same train/tube routes that are also under capacity and subsidised by the public. You couldn't make it up - but that is where we are! Trains & tubes have larger fixed overheads - the more services you run the cheaper each journey. They should also be greener and quicker than the bus. But we are encouraging people to take the bus because the fare is cheaper. This madness has to stop. The whole TFL fare system needs a complete rethink. The tube/train fare needs to be the same as the bus. Of course there will be bus passengers that need to travel on these routes for a small part of the route or where there are no stations. Lighter, smaller, more economical and greener buses should be used and routes reevaluated. As regards the best buses I would suggest its the wrong question. Putney to Kew Gardens Lion Gate arriving 10am:    40/50 mins  bus only       £1:60    22 min      train / bus    £4.25 Which is greener? It is a shame TFL do not publish route MPG - I'm guessing it could be as low as 5 MPG on some routes.
