It's really good nowadays that you can get on and off the buses with your ticket.   and also on the tubes when they are all working.  In the past you were really stuck once you'd paid. If you know your route - easier when you travel by bus - you can also get off and walk a bit (if you can) and then get another bus.  Or you can walk to the next bus stop if it is too full.  Your bus driver was as you said very patient.  You were brave to speak up - many wouldn't.  Some people are so arrogant, rude and self-obsessed they consider no-one but themselves showing off in front of friends. You painted a great picture of a trip on a hot day on an overcrowded bus.
