This is for those who keep complaining about restrictions on vehicle use: the need for serious reductions is underlined by new research that shows that around 8.7 million deaths a year are caused by pollution, much of it from vehicle use. The figure, in a four-university research study, is much worse than the previous, 2019 estimate in the Lancet of 4.2 million because it includes fresh work on the effects of small particulates. It shows that pollution causes more than one in ten deaths in Europe and the US. Enough to make anyone think who complains that they can’t drive half a mile to the supermarket. The study is in the journal Environmental Research which is behind Elsevier’s paywall, but a summary can be found here: https://www.seas.harvard.edu/news/2021/02/deaths-fossil-fuel-emissions-higher-previously-thought |
