In your apparent attempt to exonerate excessive car use you have misunderstood the many studies on the subject. To be clear, pollution (the major causes of which are oxides of nitrogen and small particulates) is a *contributory* cause of *premature* deaths. And your bland statement that "most cars these days issue virtually no particulates" is simply wrong. It's interesting that you cite Kensington and Chelsea: as in Richmond, incomes are high and this clearly helps to boost life expectancy but it is wrong to assume that this is the only factor: in fact, without the pollution there, life expectancy would be higher still. And of course CO2 generation is the major cause of global heating; this and the health effects of pollution are the result of too much reliance on motor vehicle. |
