The Coffee Importers by the station where the Piccolo bar is now, had hessian sacks of beans the children used to sit on while the elderly man with the gammy leg roasted and ground the coffee. There was also Dunn & Co. (old fashioned men's outfitters) in the High Street with the walk in double window display, Putney Tools near the bridge, also with a walk in double window where the owner used to order his young wife about in a grumpy way. Woolworths had a famous cheese counter, the fishmongers was in Lacy Road, where there was also a toy shop called Domat and a hardware/ timber shop called Darbons nearby. In fact, Putney had pretty much every shop you needed in the early 1980s.... |
