I do have some sympathy about the potential noise, Mary, but what frustrates me is the way people immediately jump to the conclusion that this will lead to ‘excessive drinking and destructive behaviour.’ Why must be it be so? I don’t recognise the idea that Putney is full of louts, nor do I believe that people who enjoy a drink turn into destructive monsters. Yet everytime a new bar, leisure facility, or anything that might appeal to younger people, is mooted there’s always an assumption that it will be akin to the last days of Rome. Must we always jump to the worst possible scenario? I think the committee reached a sensible conclusion. Give it a go, with strict conditions. If it shows signs of causing significant disruption, close it down. |
