I can't see any possibility at all of the government changing its policy on this, though legal action may make it impractical. So what is the value of Justine or any other MP resigning? Zac Goldsmith told his constituents he would do so, but I think that was in an attempt to dissuade the government from taking the decision, not in the hope that he could change that decision afterwards. Having made the promise he is quite right to carry it out but Justine made no such promise. If Ministers, or still more MPs, of a ruling party had to resign every time they disagreed with a government policy we would be in a constant state of by election and chaos. Justine just got voted MP of the year - I think Putney is lucky to have her and I think she can best promote Putney's interests from her current position. |
