The Mail online featured this story a second time, following up with the news that false reports of stomach upsets etc incurred by visiting Brew were being posted on Tripadvisor by what the paper asserted were members of the cycling fraternity who felt angered by preceding events.  Interestingly, the overwhelming online consensus was that the cyclist should have used the cycle lane, and not orchestrated an ongoing hate campaign against innocent, uninvolved cafe staff who will suffer the most from all this - I tend to agree with this majority.

Whilst I abhor Mr Wells' outburst, and can perfectly understand the cyclist taking photos and videos for potential legal purposes, I have to question the distribution of a confrontation between two private individuals on social media.  Would it not have been better to calm things down, rather than conflate a problem, by exposing the irrelevant details of where the driver lived and worked, resulting in an internet lynchmob dragging out this sorry saga, where the driver has apologised, and the police have dealt with the matter.

What has been achieved by publicising this inability of two men to share a straight leafy road in one of the most expensive parts of London with a designated cycle path?  Episodes like this occur everyday in densely built up congested low-income areas, so perhaps it is the sight of two middle class chaps arguing outside a famous private hospital for mental health that has piqued the public interest?  It is not the incident itself, but the public airing of the footage that has made rubber-necking voyeurs and self-styled magistrates of us all.  I am now being denigrated for airing an opinion.  Dear me.

Brew serves far more than granola and pancakes, and it is a testament to the success of this independent start-up that it has two other branches, presumably popular enough to generate the opening of a fourth?  If others want a "proper" restaurant on this site, presumably they were unsupportive of the excellent Pheonix which had to close a few years ago, whilst its sister eatery in Barnes is still going strong after more than two decades. Try eating instead at Eno Teca Turi, now under threat from developers.  We once had a Michlelin  starred restaurant in the Putney Bridge building, but that also closed, and this ravishing space is now occupied by one of the "soulless chains" that dominate SW15's gastronomic landscape, as described in the Time Out Eating Guide.

The cyclist and some in Putney have shot themselves in the foot, by yet again photographing private individuals in times of stress, and demanding that others "boycott Brew".  Richard encouraged us to post pictures of stranded vehicles in the Thames, as 1500 SW15 residents do on a regular basis, rejoicing in the misery of "other Londoners."  and would like to see Mr Wells slapped behind bars.  Clearly the Police disagree.

Instead of respecting privacy, this whole unfortunate incident may reinforce the view, that if visiting Putney, any unforeseen incident is likely to be captured on camera, and broadcast to the World, specifically to humiliate, and possibly involving others who were not even present at the "scene of the crime".

Starbucks serves lousy coffee in dull surroundings, and fails to pay huge amounts of corporation tax.  Brew serves good coffee and food in an innovative way in premises that have proven challenging for others.  I would rather pay a little more to support a good independent than line the pockets of large chains, or see yet another vacant site.

Discretion is the better part of valour, and whatever the behaviour of others, should we in Putney not demonstrate a little more kindness, rather than a public witch-hunt threatening a hard-working local business.  I sincerely hope that the cyclist never behaves like Mr Wells, and gets caught on camera.  Let's all move on, and hope Brew survives.  There are far more important issues, like the appalling fate of so many children in this country, that genuinely deserve our attention and scrutiny.
