My understanding is at one time they mainly came by lorry - as evidenced by at least one case in the UK and others in Europe of migrants being suffocated, and we could remove many of those who were successful back to Europe. Again, my understanding is pre Brexit UK officials had access to EU databases regarding migrants so it was possible to gain information previously recorded in the EU about those picked up. Those databases aren't available to third party countries like the UK.
