As members of the police force have been found guilty and others are awaiting trial in connection with the hacking affair and as the police did nothing about hacking for years when even the Deputy Prime Minister himself told them his phone had been hacked, I am afraid I don't agree. The allegations against Mr. Morritt, serious though they are, are as yet only allegations and unsubstantiated rumour. Police officers have been found by the courts to be guilty of criminal acts and other police officer have clearly failed to investigate proven criminal acts. The Plebgate affair is more than nonsense, it appears to have been a conspiracy by police officers to bring down a major political figure, love him or hate him - even the Labour Party's Jack Straw has spoken out for him. Having served on a couple of juries, my own experience is that criminals have got off because the police haven't bothered to get their paperwork in order, and the court system itself has worked as well as any other I could imagine. The jury has been presented with a bunch of inconclusive evidence and the CPS has hoped for a guilty verdict on the basis the jury would think the defendant must be guilty or he/she wouldn't be in court. But the police's competence is a lesser concern to me than their honesty. |
