| Some sensible, and some weird, comments on this thread but none, as far as I can see, from openly gay people - so here's one! We're playing with semantics here, since a civil partnership is essentially (if not totally) a marriage. I regard marriage as a sacrament but am not, as it happens, in favour of gay weddings in places of worship - which I believe should be reserved for heterosexual couples. I have no doubt that if they are allowed (as they will be), gay male couples will initially treat the ceremony will all due respect and dignity, but I guarantee that within a year, one of the two will be in a dress - which would be in both the metaphorical and literal senses a 'travesty'! In my view, Cameron has no fundamental convictions on the issue and is merely, cynically aiming to win over the pink vote. The biblical strictures which have been mentioned come mainly from Leviticus, which is full of the most bizarre 'laws' (I recommend that you read them), witten for another people in another age. The only comfort I draw from this debate is that places of worship will not be compelled to conduct gay weddings, and I hope that most of them will decline. |
