| Hi Geoff, I'm not one of the 'blue rinse brigade' and neither have I ever lived in any of the Shires but to me marriage has always meant the union of a man and a woman and always will mean that. It seems that people are being ridiculed or villified for holding this fundamental belief and whether it is held for religious or any other reason everyone is entitled to their own opinion without being labelled old fashioned, or much worse homophobic, if they don't agree with the 'trendy' consensus. I really don't see the need for gay marriages and all the constitutional turmoil it would cause. The Civil Partnership Act 2004 gave same-sex couples the rights and responsibilities similar to those in a civil marriage as they are entitled to the same property rights, the same exemptions on inheritance tax, and social security and pension benefits as married couples. They also have the same ability to get parental responsibility for a partner's children as well as reasonable maintenance, tenancy rights, insurance and next-of-kin rights in hospital and with doctors. There is also a process similar to divorce for dissolving a civil partnership. Incidentally I phoned a gay friend of mine who I've known for many years and is in a civil partnership himself (mainly to protect his much younger partner and ensure his inheritence) what his opinion was and he said he didn't see the need for 'marriage' and neither did most of his gay friends. By the way he is 82 and a lifelong Tory voter. |
