| Sue, I'm perfectly relaxed with you believing what you believe. No one is trying to make you believe otherwise. But it's not reciprocated. You believe you have the right to impose your view of what marriage is on everyone who doesn't share it. Imagine if instead of talking about homosexual and heterosexual marriages we were arguing over whether blacks should be confined to civil partnerships while whites could marry. I'm not suggesting for an instant that you would be condoning such a view, but I do want to give you some insight into how the "civil partnerships will do perfectly fine for THOSE people" attitude looks to those of us who don't share it. What turmoil will gay people being married cause? Sure, no one I think denies that there will need to be some clarity brought to this bill - as with all bills - but that is the purpose of the legislative process. You seem to support civil partnerships but may I respectfully ask: when the civil partnerships legislation came up originally did you support or oppose it? When this bill eventually becomes law, do you imagine for one instant that any existing married couple will suddenly feel less married? Will it tarnish or degrade the vows they made? Will it impinge in any way on how you choose to live your life? I don't believe it will, but if you believe otherwise I'd appreciate understanding why. By the way, this "trendy consensus" is supported by a clear majority of the population; in all parts of the UK; among all age groups except the oldest; among supporters of the two serious parties and the Liberal Democrats. It's just a consensus - I doubt that many within it are trendy. |
