Does anybody know the circumstances of the beggar who habitually sits, crouched, outside the Natwest Bank in the High Street? Occasionally there is a message saying that he is homeless, but most of the time there is a simply an upturned cap into which he hopes passers-by will drop money. There is also a large dog which manages to remain almost motionless for hours at a time. I am slightly disconcerted by the prospect of drawing cash from the ATMs immediately adjacent to where he and his dog sit, and go instead to those inside the bank itself, which are probably more secure and less likely to have been tampered with than those outside anyhow. The beggar himself has been around for an enormously long time now, and if his needs are urgent, I am sure that some charitable organisation would long since have intervened to help him. I am also puzzled by the fact that whilst there were several threads on this site some months back seeking to secure help for the talented young artist, there have been none at all seeking to help the man and his dog. It is not as if he were in poor health. When he has had enough of sitting on the pavement, he makes pretty rapid progress down the High Street towards the river – as does his dog. Is anybody else uneasy about the position? |
