As a Ruskinian at heart I do not believe in tearing a building down for the sake of it and replacing it with something new - I much prefer renovation. However, in the case of the new proposal for the East facade of Putney Exchange, aesthetically I think it is a vast improvement on what is there currently. Simple clean lines that draw the customer's eye and therefore into the shopping arcade itself is of paramount importance in this day of competition for retail business. The exchange plans should imho have a good number of cyclist spaces available, to encourage those who do want to use them to feel that there is somewhere for them to park. Meanwhile Putney High Street is a dreadful mish mash of buildings already - the best thing that could be done would be to raze the lot to the ground, make the pavement wider for pedestrians and embrace modernity for the 21st century. Brighton, which has far more architecturally sound architecture, did precisely that a few years ago in the North Laines and it works brilliantly alongside the Victorian terrace houses in the area. |
