Hopefully, WBC will obtain a substantial sum from St James toward the redevelopment of Putney Station. Putney Station with it's proximity to East Putney, District Line, presents an excellent potential to act as a transport hub as defined by Network Rail and last year's report, presented to Lord Adonis, the then Transport Secretary. With a little imagination, it is possible to relocate the current bus station to a deck over the station and remodel the road system in the vicinity. I'm not sure exactly when but I don't think South West Trains franchise expires for a few more years. It is Network Rail who would, in the major part, fund any development and be the main beneficiary of that development. The level of funding has to reflect the additional income they could gain from redevelopment. The question to our councillors should be about what proposals they have presented or discussed with Network Rail concerning Network Rail's "Access for All" and "National Stations Improvement Programme" in relation to Putney station. As I understand it, the currently intended spend on Putney Station is minimal, aimned solely at compliance with the law rather than any significant improvement. Isn't it overdue for the coumncil to show some forethought and think in terms of genuine, long term improvement by helping create a modern transport hub at Putney? Incidentally, rail industry talk is that the government intends to delay the longer platforms and additional rolling stock we desperately need to form longer trains, thus easing the overcrowding we suffer beyond 2020. |
