Sian you may well be right as the present system isn't right when we already know that so many people's votes may not count except in cases like Putney which are marginals. However I would like to know that if the move to PR is to happen it will not allow fringe parties with extremist policies to have the final say in government because they 'get into bed' with the larger parties.. Italy and Israel are two countries which illustrate this major problem. Can you imagine the situation if for instance after a future election the Lib/Dems or Tories become the number one party as far as the votes were concerned but needed support of the BNP votes (which would under PR translate into MPs) to form the government! An unlikely and extreme example I know but anything is possible if we look back at 20th century history. Oh I forgot History is a bad word according to Labour's current National Curriculum...along with French, Latin and basic Reading, 'Riting and 'Rithmetic learning skills. What was 'New' Labour's mantra in 1997 (when so many of our first time voters were small kids) education, education education (actually i mean educashun, educashun, educashun) |
