“What are the pros and cons? Apart from the obvious one that they will be awarded far more seats than currently...doesn't it also mean that fringe parties such as the BNP will also gain seats and possibly in the future affect the balance of power in government?” - More likely the Greens than the BNP... Gerhard Schröder compromised Germany’s nuclear power to keep his coalition together and the Greens off his back. This forced Germany into increased reliance on quick green energy fixes and Russian gas – the latter having important consequences far beyond Germany... Due largely to German and Polish concerns over their energy security (i.e. a perceived over-reliance on Russian gas), these two countries pushed for a clause in the Lisbon Treaty enabling the compulsory pooling of energy supplies in an emergency – in effect, French nuclear and British North Sea energy supplies compulsorily being re-routed east. |
