It's about doing both.  Reducing the necessity for so much energy by altering and choosing better and so never wasting all that we do. Trying to always put the blame on 'others' for everything is never the answer.  Joining and working as a group to achieve something eg waste less and grow more food (even if it is just learning how to root the broken basil and mint stems by putting them in water) is a start to doing something for ourselves. You can't do everything all of the time but you can do some things some of the time! www.recyclenow.com can be useful re plastics and other things and but so can avoiding it (a great shame about the loss of shops that you take your own containers to) but so can sending it back to them to deal with themselves if they don't have recycling instructions.
