Steven, one might say that heterosexual couples are more common, but Mr Hawkes chose to use the word "normal", which could be interpreted as an unconscious bias that he considers gay couples as abnormal? I'm sure he'd deny that but given his apparent dislike of things that deviate from his norms of the past (trans people, Muslim culture, for example?) I'm not sure he'd be the best judge. (I'm not saying I'm comfortable with all changes but things don't stay the same; for examplemany youngsters get information and news from social media not MSM which often has more misinformation, but I accept things move on but one has to live with and try and mitigate rather than move backwards.) The danger with this conversation is we're trying to generalise; I'm sure Sir Elton and David's children are loved and don't want for anything (I realise they weren't adoptedas such). Surely, the root issue is vetting and supervision by adoption authorities irrespective of an adopters sexuality but looking at the individuals? I've seen that fostering of gay teenagers by gay couples can be very successful because of understanding of the issues encountered by those teenagers. So an open mind of what's appropriate for all involved in specific cases is perhaps necessary? |
