I (personally) agree with the rebels though, the two child benefit cap was/is a cruel and vindictive policy. Labour have to come up with a plan for the £3bn+ shortfall that scrapping the two child cap will create. But it does highlight one of the foibles of UK politics. The Tories voted the policy in en masse in 2017 whilst Labour (and others) voted against it. Now that Labour are in power they voted against scrapping it (for now at least) whilst the Tories (and others) all voted to scrap it. It highlights how voting in opposition is much easier than being in power. We'll see what Labour's plans are for removing the cap once they have accounted for how they will pay for it. I believe it is in their plans to do so early on in their term (but obviously not this early). Also good to see that number of rebels (and the 42 that abstained). Should have been more though. |
