@ed. well you asked what environmentalists thought of the ferry, hence my comments... I know nothing about engineering but are you sure a new bridge is the most environmentally friendly? I assume it would require steel and concrete, both of which are extremely energy intensive to make. As we have all that steel already in place surely the most environmentally sound solution is to continue to use the existing structure?
