Oslo has a population of 545,000 rising to 1.3m in the greater fjord region, and Norway a population of 5.4m. London has a population of 8.8m and England has a population of 66.5m. What works for Oslo is extremely unlikely to work for London, since both cities are configured entirely differently. I have used Oslo public transport which is extremely efficient, with beautiful carriages for children/families on most trains. It has a tram system with 99 stops which is used by around 135,000 people. Here, it's all about the numbers and too many people with unrealistic expectations, and long-term failure to invest in infrastructure. Hammersmith Bridge has never recovered from the IRA bombings it suffered. It would be interesting to know if with the correct engineering work, this bridge could sustain a tram system, running from Barnes Station to Hammersmith Tube. |
