The age of the bridge is irrelevant. The principle is that a toll builds up a fund that maintains a bridge in perpetuity. If you believe tolls are some sort of solution you need to consider road pricing and not discriminate people who may have no choice but to cross a bridge. We're getting ULEZ charges in Putney soon, do you really think we need the added financial pressure of being charged for crossing bridges as well? If you really think the government or TFL or the council are too poor and useless, they could stick a supplement on the rates. We pay less than most parts of the country anyway and we are arguably wealthier, especially if a property owner. See how that pans out with the local electorate. |
