Philippa that makes sense to me. A couple of years ago I was in the office probably four days a week, now typically one. Whilst that may be more extreme than many I can easily believe that there has been a significant and sustainable increase in working from home. Like many employers mine now has hot desks only (they switched from individual desks a couple of years ago) and couldn’t cope with everyone being in the office at the same time as there are more people than desks. My local coffee shop on the other hand is increasingly busy with people tapping away on their notebooks. I think this shift was considered some time ago but the technology and mindset took longer to embed, however it’s definitely starting now. To what level it continues and whether there is a shift back at some stage who knows but it must play havoc with transport funding. Also I think with the explosion of Uber et al in the evenings people find it more convenient to take taxis home so perhaps that is fair to start targeting in a small way, perhaps by removing congestion charge exemption; on a per fare basis the difference would not be significant. I would be fan of a toll on Putney Bridge despite having to pay it, as I’m sure this would significantly reduce traffic over the bridge and down the high street as people discover alternatives - a small reduction in cars could ease congestion significantly. |
