There is quite a lot more that could be done to enable Londoners to use their cars less, and agree that a multi-pronged approach is required for such a complex area. I think that we could be much more ambitious about this - higher shifts to active travel have been achieved elsewhere in a London so we know it is possible. And, iwe are well behind the best in Europe in this area (about half a century behind the Netherlands for example). A good start would be to focus on changes to the street environment rather than just hectoring individuals - government’s own evid nice show this to be a relatively low cost and high value intervention. Such improvements would not have a significant impact on essential car users. |
