| Claire, I should add that not only did all the Councillors collude with the Council in keeping the under sale of the easement rights secret (see John Cameron's post) they also stood by while the Friends of Putney Common fought to point out that the original planning permission the Council had granted themselves as developer of PH was unlawful. FoPC took it to the High Court and the Council was forced to quash their own planning permission. Why should people have to go to these lengths, risk so much personally? WBC already knew it was an invalid application before they approved it. The council was liable to millions in losses in my case. I went to see Eddie Lister about my case. He said he would look into it and telephone me back the next day. He never called me back. Silence. Eventually a ward councillor came forward to represent me who at no stage in proceedings ever agreed to meet me face-to-face. Not once. Accessible? Available? No. They didn't even bother to come to see the development site. They wouldn't even give me their phone number to aid communication. I will never forget the moment when another Councillor I'd never met before came knocking on my door, totally out of the blue. I thought he'd come to help me. To support me. I was so stupid!! What he was really doing was feeling me out and applying some Council pressure: he asked me was my husband aware of what I was doing? Was he supportive of me? (I wasn't married) Was I aware of the pressure and risks involved with taking the Council to court? Was I aware of the financial risks of losing a Judicial Review? Fragrant and dignified, trusted people it would seem these councillors and trustees. Not the kind of people you'd imagine to be duplicitous and underhand. But in planning affairs, when there's a great deal of money at stake, the Council's reputation and votes under threat, I wouldn't turn to my Councillors. I didn't lose all faith and trust though. I have to say I was very, very fortunate. A good local authority barrister and a construction lawyer also came knocking on my door. They stepped in to support me at every stage to give the legal fire power my campaign needed. Good, honest people who gave their time and expertise for free in order to protect our neighbourhood. |
