Nothing new about Labour and the unions relationship apart from more unions are becoming unaffiliated. Unite led by Sharon Graham - who after winning the Union leadership has focussed on her members. Which is actually her job. Oddly many of her rivals / predecessors preferred to concentrate on other things and the bigger political picture. Since then they have won a number of disputes or perhaps more correctly disputes have been settled with pay rises awarded to her members. None of this explains the situation in Birmingham. Now there may be outdated practices etc but from the union's view reorganisation of working practices should not impact the members pay. Reorganisation is often necessary and pay can become an issue - sometimes people people move and mark pay - i.e. keep they pay but do not receive any future incremental increases. I believe the council are looking to cut pay by up to 25%. Some may celebrate this hard nose decision but as the union have pointed out councillors allowances have gone up. To be fair I have never been a member of a union, but have often over many years have heard people complain about workers getting pay rises but have never heard anyone complain or object about their own pay rise. I'm not sure what the councils position is or how costly the dispute is in terms of expenses to the council. They seem to not have a good history when it comes to finances and women. One wonders if they have done their homework. Sharon Graham: "To resolve this dispute, the council & govt need to agree not to cut the pay of refuse workers. That's it." |
