It would have looked good for the Government if they had stood up to Marks & Spencer and said no, submit new plans that incorporate the existing building.  It would have shown Labour protecting Britain’s heritage: people do care about this.

I also think one of the reasons the Conservatives lost control of Westminster Council is because they initially gave the go ahead for demolition, instead of protecting the building.  There are plenty of residents in this part of the West End who like the handsome buildings in the neighbourhood.

Angela Rayner made a cowardly decision and this will be part of her legacy when Labour lose the next election.   Shame on her!
