Many thanks to everyone for their input. I'm afraid I'd feel too much of a nelly using a help point or phoning ahead for help just to lift a buggy, and NetWork Rail's advice to use Richmond station is detached from reality. It's a shame, because this trip was the first airing of my Freedom Pass, but a lesson painfully learnt: I'll invest in a car seat and drive my grandchildren around London, and keep my fingers firmly crossed that I never need a wheelchair as long as I live in Putney.
