Putney AFA (Access for All) works were due to commence post Olympics in September. I do not know what the hold-up is but have my suspicions.

The original intention of Network Rail entailed building a temporary foot bridge toward the Oxford Road end of the platforms so that demolition of the existing stairs could be carried out in phases to allow for the new construction while enabling connection between platforms on foot. Not buggy friendly I'm afraid but temporary (perhaps 1 year).

The new work includes a new concourse, extended off the existing foot bridge, new gate line on the new concourse (that includes new shops), new stairs and three lifts; one to each platform, altered and refurbished ticket hall and various other works.

Technically, it is a very challenging project to keep the station operational while carrying out the work but after so many years of delay, it is unacceptable. Putney is the last station in its class in London to be upgraded. These works were originally programmed to happen 6 years ago in 2006. Justine Greening has consistently lobbied Network Rail about the lack of progress on the AFA scheme among other issues such as the lack of a coherent strategy to deal with future over-crowding at Putney. Extended platforms, longer trains and possible increased frequency will help but the anticipated long term population increase and demand on the railway at Putney appears to be inadequately planned for under current NR proposals.

In the meantime, there is a number you can call, telling Network Rail which train you will be on to arrange for assistance getting on and off at manned stations that do not yet have lifts. 0800 52 82 181 is the helpline number. There are also "help" points on each platform that you can use and they are supposed to work 24 hours a day.
