Just opened my letter from the Council about this. As you say Sue, here we go again. Very disappointed they still want to do away with the pedestrian access. On reading through the documentation for previous application the Council writes that the applicant states that ''the closure of the entrance will increase footfall to retailers between the High St corner entrance and the pedestrian entrance and reduce the wind tunnelling effect to Mall 3 which is increased significantly when Lacy Road door is open''. The Council goes on to say that ''Whilst the incorporation of the corridor into the supermarket does require Council consent, there is no statutory obligation for the Management company to keep the Lacy Road entrance open. In this respect, though the loss is regrettable, its retention is not something that can be insisted on.'' So, if I understand this right, the Council could say No to the incorporation of the corridor with Waitrose, but the Management company of the Exchange could still close it? What would be the purpose of that? It would just be an empty space then. Unless the Management have an agreement with Waitrose? As for the windtunnel effect - simple solution to put doors at each end of the corridor. Once again, the disabled access and convenience to locals would be taken away if the corridor shuts. And agree with you Patricia - don't understand that either. Between the High St and the corridor there's the Martial Arts place, Hairways, Ritz Music, a gift shop, the Italian Deli and Moomba's. I don't think there are any others? I wonder what difference there would be to trade if the corridor was shut? I suspect not a lot as we shop there anyway, regardless of whether we're going into the Exchange. |
