Agreed that pollution from buses needs to be cut, though I would imagine (though I don't have any figures for this) that it would be far outweighed by pollution from other vehicles, but your suggestion to open up the side roads for more traffic is simply not the answer. Provision of more road space just increases the level of traffic so that, after a short while, congestion is as bad as ever. Remember Predict and Provide, the foolish road policy of the past? It didn't work, and it won't work now: we need to reduce road traffic, not make room for yet more.
