| It will have to happen, Richard, but from other threads on SW15 you can see how entrenched the car lobby is! People have to be weaned off the internal combustion engine one of these days but will it happen before we have choked ourselves to death? A Kings College London report on pollution levels in the Putney High Street area was prepared a few years ago and in fact I believe the council commissioned it. A result, belatedly, has been the installation of the pollution monitoring equipment. I am told this was opposed by some because it would just highlight what an unpleasant environment the High Street is and that would be bad for business! Then parking charges in Putney Exchange were lowered to combat the effects of recession on the shops - in the belief that only be making it as easy as possible to drive here will anyone come. How do we change these mindsets?? |
