| I seem to recall, Richard, that you decried the naysayers before Keir Starmer was elected and look how that turned out. I am afraid that Andy Burnham does not inspire much confidence. Having been a Blairite, then a Brownite and then a Corbynista, his latest incarnation is that of a ‘business friendly’ socialist. What that seems to mean is borrowing large sums of money (in Manchester’s case £1.4 billion) in order to finance infrastructure projects. As prime minister the fiscal rules won’t allow him to engage in unfounded spending, so he will be forced to raise taxes, probably by introducing a higher rate income tax band of 50%, a wealth tax and an increase in CGT and death duties. A wealth tax will disproportionately affect homeowners in London and the south east and tax increases generally slow growth. Unfortunately Burnham seems more interested in redistribution than growth. A focus on eliminating inequality does not create wealth - it just ensures that poverty is shared more equally. |
