While Sadiq is a dreadful mayor, his views are not particularly extreme. According to an interesting article in the 'Telegraph' today, the closest figure to Mandani in British politics is Zack Polanski, who admits to taking 'huge inspiration' from the newly elected Mayor of New York. Both are pro- Palestinian (Mamdani was actually arrested at a pro-Gaza protest a week after the October 7 massacre i.e. before Israel even started its campaign), both are pro-migrant, both are pro-trans rights, both are soft on policing (Polanski wants to legalise hard drugs while Mamdani once backed the 'defund the police' movement) and, most importantly, both are in favour of taxing the rich in order fund public services and benefits. Mamdani's spending plans are expected to cost $10 billion per year (with some estimates putting the long term total in excess of $100 billion), while Polanski wants to renationalise the utilities, phase out the private rental sector, prevent company bosses earning more than ten times the salary of the lowest paid worker and impose a wealth tax of 1% on assets above £10 million. Trump called those who support these kind of policies as 'dummies'. It is hard to disagree.
