The European Convention on Human Rights  was intended to protect citizens from totalitarianism, not to usurp the right of national governments to make their own laws on social issues.

The Convention makes no reference to climate change. It is the judges who have decided to extend the clause regarding the right to family life to net zero. But as Allister Heath  asked, where will this power grab by the judges of the ECHR end? Will they instruct the UK government to increase spending on the NHS, or build more houses in the name of promoting family life? Will they instruct the government to issue a smoking ban since children whose parents smoke are likely to be deprived of family life if their parents die prematurely?  No doubt many people would advocate these steps, but it is for elected politicians to enact such laws, not unelected judges in Strasbourg. Otherwise what is the point of electing MPs?
