I am not aware that Lucille sought to justify the slaughter of babies and children in her post. On the contrary, she quoted an interview from the 'Guardian' which suggests that Hamas regards the slaughter of civilians, including children, as fully justified. As regards the creation of Israel, in October 1947 the UN voted to partition Palestine between the Jews and the Arabs, a plan accepted by the Jewish population but rejected by the Arabs. On 14 May 1948 Israel declared its independence, more or less in accordance with the original partition plan, and was immediately attacked by all its Arab neighbours. In the course of the war over 700 000 Arabs left or were forced to leave their homes. Around this time 250 000 Jews left or were forced to leave their homes in the surrounding Arab countries and Iran, followed by 400 000 more over the next 20 years. The difference is that, except for Jordan, the Palestinian refugees were not granted citizenship by the host countries and were kept in refugee camps along the border, while the Jewish refugees were welcomed by Israel. Are these the circumstances referred to?
