It was reported that many people in deprived areas voted for Brexit as a protest against austerity and the Cameron government, and it was probably Farage that led this movement. Unfortunately for remainers, Cameron et al leading the government's remain campaign was an own goal as they were also associated with austerity and peoples' deprivation. Farage was able to feed on this and blame the EU rather than the ruthless Tory government for this deprivation. Let's be honest, Corbyn was luke warm during the labour remain campaign, he really doesn't seem to have changed his anti EEC position since the 1970s so that didn't help getting labour voters on side. The real gainers from Brexit will be the likes of Mogg and other finance people who want to leave the EU as they're trying to avoid strict financial disclosure rules. Nursing, care-staff and fruit picking have always been low paid. The incomers from eastern Europe were generally well educated helped fill vacancies at the going rate. If they were taking jobs from others why is there now a shortage of staff in hospitals and care homes? It was the government's austerity programmes that cut or held down salaries for these staff, and also held down police pay and reduced numbers. If i rememer, in the past child, perhaps student, labour was used for fruit picking? Even the infamous "Polish plumbers" and other workmen were welcomed because they were well trained, competent and had a good work ethic. I've had British plumbers we've asked me to pay before I've tested their work and then been upset when I've insisted on testing it and refused to pay until they've really stopped the leak. Ok, many British workmen are good. Anyway, all Cameron did with his referendum was deeply divide the country and Johnson's blustering, arrogant and non consensual style is making it worse. May wasn't any better, she did realise that she couldn't carry on like that but too late! It's a mess; there won't be a consensus without another referendum, an election will most likely end up with another hung parliament so nothing will move on .... |
