| A friend of mine who works in broadcast media assures me that a number of female Labour MPs in leave inclined constituencies have adopted a pro-Leave view not out of conviction but out of fear of their lives. What happened to Jo Cox is what everyone knows about but MPs are subject to daily intimidation. The party leadership are aware of their predicament which is why allowances will be made for those MPs who break a three line whip. If you hark back to the Paula Sheriff speech in parliament which was basically a plea to Boris Johnson to reduce the heat of the debate because it was putting MPs in danger, the outrage at his unfeeling and dismissive attitude becomes more understandable. I don't know if Caroline Flint is one of the MPs who is voting the way they are because of intimidation or not, but some definitely are. However, if the vote looks as though it will be very close they may be asked to not be responsible for allowing it to sneak through. Paul is a decent fellow and when he uses words like 'treacherous' he would no doubt claim that it is being used figuratively. However, there is a significant proportion of the population who wouldn't know the meaning of that word. They really believe that people with whom they disagree with on what is effectively a dispute about trade policy are traitors. People should chose their words carefully. |
