Paul, I am sure CF will vote with her conscience like most other MPs such as our own excellent MP. That’s what they’re supposed to do. There will apparently be an election soon so the ones we elected just two years ago can always be booted out if their constituents dislike how they’ve been voting. I know both major parties voted to honour the result of the referendum but crucially, as I have pointed out before, neither said they would support leaving at any cost. And those costs will inevitably hit hardest those who are least able to afford them. Meanwhile the People’s March today saw hundreds of thousands on the streets imploring parliament to allow a second, confirmatory, referendum on Brexit. I was there with wife, daughter, son-in-law and grandson. From my observations of the crowd they came from all over the UK, including Wales, Scotland, Newcastle, Dorset and, yes, even Tunbridge Wells. Not just the London middle class metropolitan elite that Brexiteers seem to hate so much. And it was fairly classless too. All sorts of folk there, in good humour but quietly determined. There may be mutual incomprehension between Remainers and Leavers and people are getting very entrenched in their positions. But that doesn’t mean there has to be mutual disrespect. Talk of treachery and betrayal is extremely provocative and unhelpful. A huge number of people, perhaps even a majority in this country, now think we should take Brexit back to the voting public given the deadlock in parliament. I can’t see a better way out than having a confirmatory vote on the deal Johnson has just delayed putting to parliament. |
