I don't normally take these things personally, but I don't think I would ever be reduced to telling people "let them eat cake". I have relatives who were UKIP (I assume now BP) supporters.,) They grew up differently to me although they're comfortable these days, at least one probably better off than me as he's an accountant. I discuss Brexit, etc with them, we have different views but live with that and I suspect my account cousin is concerned about the impact of Brexit on hos investments, probably would like a people's vote to change his mind. I came from a working class background, went to a 1960s comprehensive school with a forward thinking headmaster (a scientist graduate who knew the value of maths and sciences) and I worked hard to get good A levels, got a grant to a great science university - Imperial College - then took my oppounities in the new software industry. It's true many in London (like me) don't have the poverty issues, or understanding, of those in the north of England; however, Brexit is unlikely to help any unemployed or single parents in Wigan, Sunderland or Newcastle. I know people there who desperately want to remain in the EU because they know leavers misinformed voters and they want the freedom for their children - and grand children (showing my age!) - to take up opportunities in the EU. Still, if you're going to eat cake, just make sure it's vegan. (Great vegan chocolate brownies at Tendril, Putney Plaza, East Putney and Foodilic Putney High street usually have a vegan cake. No personal interest, just a great idea ??) |
